Charal 2 wins IMOCA fleet

Finally Beyou enjoys the sweet taste of victory again as co-skipper, Lagravière 3-peats Elation was evident, the decompression immense, but relief was probably the underlying emotion for French skipper Jérémie Beyou when he crossed the finish line off Fort-de-France just before dawn to win the IMOCA division. Whilst victory has been a long time coming again for the French ace who has suffered too many setbacks over recent years to win, that is not the case for super talented, sought-after co-skipper Morgan Lagravière who made history this morning as the first sailor to win the same class three times on successive editions of the Coffee Route race.

Jérémie Beyou and Morgan Lagravière

French duo Jérémie Beyou and Morgan Lagravière (Charal 2) took the IMOCA class victory on the TRANSAT CAFÉ L’OR Le Havre Normandie double handed race from Le Havre to Martinque this Friday morning when they crossed the finish line at 05:15:18hrs local time 09:15:18 UTC hrs local time (minus 4hrs UTC). Their elapsed time for the course is 11d 19h 45mn 18sec. It is Beyou’s first major ocean race win since 2020 whilst co-skipper Lagravière wins the IMOCA race for the third successive edition, a new record on this 17th edition of the biennial Coffee Route. Victory is all the sweeter for the hugely talented, ultra competitive Beyou, who has won La Solitaire three times, but has struggled with technical problems – small and large – on many of his main IMOCA races. Recruiting Lagravière, who won in 2023 and 2021 with Thomas Ruyant, as co-skipper has contributed significantly to their success this time, as have technical advances which have given the powerful black hulled Sam Manuard designed IMOCA a speed advantage on this course.

Showtime !

From a very dramatic first night across 12 utterly captivating days of racing, the Ocean Fifty fleet has thrilled race fans with their determination, their daring moves, and their infectious good humor. And then in a fitting climax they offered the Fort-de-France public a spectacular finale, worthy of their race, as the first four duos all crossed the finish line in less than 45 minutes after covering just over 5,500 nautical miles. They burst into the bay of Fort-de-France like the cannonballs, appropriately fired from the ramparts of Fort-de-France’s Fort Saint-Louis to celebrate a slightly unexpected victory of underdogs Viabilis Océans.
