From Frankie and Will - 11TH HOUR RACING

Eagle-eyed viewers of the tracker will notice that 11th Hour Racing stopped and retraced its tracks around 1700 UTC on Sunday, November 2. The reason for this was because the seal on our liferaft had been accidentally broken. As soon as we discovered what had happened, we informed the Race Directors who gave us a 30-minute penalty in accordance with the Sailing Instructions. To execute the penalty, we sailed through an imaginary line, and then 30 minutes later, passed back through that same line, in the same direction. It’s frustrating as we have been fighting hard to keep up with Charal, but it was important that we cleared the penalty as early as possible, got back to full speed, and to our battle at the front of the fleet.

Not getting any easier

The ambition to have all four racing classes on the TRANSAT CAFÉ L’OR Le Havre Normandie finish in Martinique is very much under threat because of the unusually complicated weather patterns on the Atlantic. Maybe the 2023 race to Martinique is remembered as a straightforward one – after an initial delay to the IMOCA start and a stop in Lorient for the Class40s – but this contest is proving a real challenge to skippers and race organisers alike.

Ocean Fifty

Capsize, capsize, capsize!

On the night of October 25-26, after the Ocean Fifty boats set off from Le Havre to Normandy on the Transat Café L'Or, three of them capsized in the difficult waters of the English Channel. Six sailors were trapped beneath their upturned hulls, water up to their chins, breathless with fear. This is the story and testimony of a night when the sea robbed them of their transatlantic dream and no doubt left long term mental scars.

Change of itinerary for the ULTIM

The race will continue in a shorter format than planned: the detour via Ascension has been canceled, and the San Pedro and San Paolo archipelago will therefore be their last waypoint before reaching Martinique.

The ETA for the large trimarans is now set for November 6 in Fort-de-France.

One week in

At one week into the TRANSAT CAFÉ L’OR Le Havre Normandie racing remains tight and unpredictable across all four classes. In the multihull classes, the challenge is to dethrone the long-established leader. Edenred 5 is holding on well in the Ocean Fifty class, and in the ULTIM class, SVR Lazartigue has emerged almost unscathed from the Doldrums this morning.
