Martinique is starting to loom larger on a far horizon for the ULTIMs which are expected in Fort-de-France on Thursday. For them the TRANSAT CAFE L’OR Le Havre Normandie is getting into the crucial phase with the ULTIMs flying at an average speed of over 30 knots, closing the South American coast. The Ocean Fifty class is also making direct progress almost halfway between Cape Verde and the Caribbean islands chain, below an area of light winds that the IMOCAs will have to navigate in the next 48 hours. There has been no change of leader in these three classes but the intensity is unrelenting. Tired, the crews, who already have a week of racing under their belts, could spare a thought for the Class40s who are sailing upwind sailing, the angles depending very much on strategies. This morning the advantage is with the competitors positioned furthest north, who are pushing hard to reach a front they must cross today as quickly as possible.
